My heart just melts when it comes to Family sessions! I have never thought of it as a daily part of my job, I have always seen it as a way to make new friends with the exception of holding a camera. Family sessions are not simply a means of decorating your home - they are ultimately an expression of the love you share as a family.

What to expect and how to prepare?
Make a day of it! Make sure you are telling your kids about your family photo session in the days leading up to it, mention how much fun it’s going to be. Maybe plan on going to get breakfast together afterwards or somewhere else special so it seems exciting! Talk to your kids about silly faces they might make and maybe let them select between two outfits. Help your daughter choose a fun lip gloss she will get to wear for her pictures or have your son practice styling his hair fancy.
Call me by my name and let them know you are excited to see me and to spend time playing together. Make sure you schedule your session around naps and maybe don’t schedule a late night family movie for the evening prior to your session. Please don’t ask your kids to say cheese! We all know those ‘cheese’ grimaces are not your kids natural lovely faces. It’s my job to get great expressions; expressions that are natural and authentic, and I will never ask your kids to say cheese to do so.
Kids will be kids. If your child is super grouchy or excited or sad, or whiny or shy, don’t worry! Sometimes they just need a little time. At times I may take your child off on our own little adventure for a bit, not out of your sight, just a little ways off usually to pick flowers for example. Children often change when they are not under mom and dads watch, these are the times we can often get the best expressions! I will also try to capture a few of those grouchy expressions too because they are great faces and memories for the future.
Above all please never be embarrassed if your kids aren’t little posing angels who want to sit still and smile into the camera. I don’t think I’ve met that child yet :)
What to wear?
Making sure you and your family are dressed in coordinating colors leads to an image that looks cohesive and professional. Biggest tips while choosing outfits are – no logos, they are distracting and tend to make your images look more like snapshots, try to steer clear of super bright colors or being too “matchy-matchy” (think jeans and white shirts for all). The best plan is to choose a neutral color palate, picking a few main colors and mixing fabrics and patterns. Set everything out on a bed, if it all looks good together and doesn’t clash, you are on the right track!
"Choose a location that is meaningful to you, whether it be your favorite cafe, your living room, your favorite park, the beach, or even open flower fields. Visiting a favorite spot opens up the doors to interact with each other as a family in a natural way—whether it be walking together holding hands, while the kids dance and skip, or enjoying a sunset stroll together. Family sessions aren't just about taking straight forward portraits—it is an excellent opportunity to get real photos showcasing the small moments you share with each other as a family. Being in an environment that cultivates laughter, smiles, and hugs that you share on the daily is really conducive to a successful Family session." I have done so many Family sessions to date and I'm always open to making suggestions so please don't hesitate to ask :) Ultimately we want your children to enjoy the experience!
Lifestyle Newborn sessions are more of a casual approach to newborn photography as apposed to a posed/studio session. There may be some posing but the intention is to capture more natural images of the baby and your home. The ideal time for newborn sessions are when babies are between 5 and 10 days old but sessions can be done with babies up to 6 weeks old and usually last 1-2 hours max. Newborns are incredible but so is the love in the air. Memories of this time-frame often become fuzzy for new parents and that is precisely why I feel these types of shoots are so important. As a mother of two I understand that a little preparation can go a long way and I always give my clients the following pointers: Newborn sessions needs to be done before your baby is 10 days old. After that they become too alert. You are more than welcome to incorporate some of your own props. Make your expectations clear e.g. if you want some family pictures as well it needs to be discussed beforehand. Try to arrange your session so that it overlaps with naptime. It’s also a good idea to try and feed your baby just before the session starts. Try and keep your baby awake for at least 1 – 2 hours before the session.
Avoid having to unnecessarily dress or undress baby once the session starts. Props and accessories should be easy to add / take away. The room / rooms where the session will take place needs to be warm enough for baby and as tidy as possible. Make sure there is enough natural light in your selected room / rooms.
White noise or womb sounds can have a calming effect on the newborn during the session. Have a pacifier at hand if your baby uses one. Typically, I schedule all newborn sessions between five and ten days after birth. Although I will schedule newborns at any age, I strongly encourage parents to schedule sessions when babies are at least under two weeks of age. At this age, they are more likely to curl up in “womb-like” poses, and stay asleep longer.
When can i expect to receive my photos?
Typically images are received between 8 to 10 weeks depending on the agreement made upon booking your session.
